Grid reference conversions (1 Viewer)

Hi all

Not sure where to post this, but this seemed as good a place as any.

I'm planning a trip for various things and have a list of latitude/longditudes, which I'm trying to mark up onto Google Earth to help me plan an itinerary.

Trouble is, they are in a diferent format to that used by GE:

Mine are formatted thus:

N40 15.492 E9 13.040

Whereas GE uses:

40 15 49.03N 09 13 04.32E

How do I convert mine to get an accurate reference? Trouble is, the GR's I have are for specific spots, so they need to be bang on, and I'm not sure how far out I'll be if I just use the first six figures.

All advice and help appreciated.

Thanks

Sean

Thanks, but I couldn't find what the references I have are called!

Most converters seem to convert grid refs, UTM or easting/northing, but the trouble I'm having is knowing what the difference is between my lat/long and google earth's are.

EDIT: found it - the ones I have are metric, so they are the thousandths of 60 degrees. So I just multiply the last three numbers by 60 to get the minutes.

http://boulter.com/gps/ does it automatically.

Well done Ghostly Vision. I was just starting to get a headache thinking about either multiplying or dividing by 60, till I saw your edit/solution.

Pasting N40 15.492 E9 13.040 or 40 15 49.03N 09 13 04.32E into Google Earth takes me the the same place in Sardinia. Am I missing something?

You can change the format in Google Earth.

Go to Tools > Options and change the Lat/Long setting to what you want.

You have "Degrees and Decimal Minutes" where GE is looking for "Degrees Minutes and Seconds".

Most devices and programs can be set to several formats. I prefer Decimal Degrees. Your N40 15.492 E9 13.040 would be N40.25820 E9.21733, much clearer I believe.
