RFI Islay in July (1 Viewer)

I'm lucky enough to be heading to Islay for a week in mid-July.
It will be a general walking, wildlife watching, whisky drinking trip 8-P.

It's my first time on the island so I thought I'd ask if anyone has any specific advice on sites to visit for any of the scarcer birds and animals.

Thanks in advance
Nick

Hi Nick

The Opus article should keep you going till others come in.

Not a lot I can add to it really; I've been twice (in October and April). A beautiful island with so much to see and do.

Will you have a car?

Thanks for the replies, there certainly seems plenty to see and do.
Given good weather I'm sure it's going to be a fantastic week.
I'm hoping to find Black Grouse and Corncrake while we're there as I've never seen either very well in the past.
We have a car so we'll be getting around the island as much as possible, but as we're staying right by Laphroaig and Lagavulin I might not be doing too much driving! Cycle hire is looking like a sensible option.

Thanks again
Nick

I'm not totally sure whether Black Grouse is found in Islay these days. If it is there are probably only a handful and I think you'd have to be incredibly lucky to find them. I only saw one during a year and a half of living there, and that was a fluke. The south coast should be a really nice base for seeing plenty, especially along the road to Claggain Bay or on the Oa. Hope you enjoy your trip.
