Missing ODs ... of Fossil birds (with Swedish Common names) (1 Viewer)

Björn Bergenholtz

(former alias "Calalp")
Sweden
Fred, as I´ve mentioned before there are a few extinct, fossil alt. sub-fossil birds that have Swedish Common names, hence included in my MS.

Now I´m having trouble finding the ODs of the following five:

• Hildebrandt's Elephant Bird Aepyornis hildebrandti BURCKHARDT 1893 (in Swedish: Hildebrandts elefantfågel)
Burckhardt, R. (1893). Über Aepyornis. Paläontologische Abhandlungen (Neue Folge) 2 (6): 127-145.

• Gracile Elephant Bird Aepyornis gracilis MONNIER 1913 (in Swedish: spenslig elefantfågel)
Monnier, L. 1913. Paléontologie de Madagascar. VII. Les Aepyornis. Annales de Paléontologie 8: 125–172.

• East Asian Ostrich Struthio anderssoni LOWE & BATE 1931 (in Swedish: gobistruts)
Lowe, P R & D M A Bate. 1931. Struthious Remains from Northern China and Mongolia; with descriptions of Struthio wimani, Struthio anderssoni and Struthio mongolicus Spp. nov. With a Note on Remains of Carinate Birds. Paleontologia Sinica, Serie C, 6 (4): 1-40. 中国古生物志 (第六号 第四册) 中国鸵鸟化石

• Barbados Goose Neochen barbadiana BRODKORP 1965 (in Swedish: barbadosgås)
Brodkorb, P. 1965. Fossil birds from Barbados, West Indies. The Journal of the Barbados Museum and Historical Society 31 (1): 3-10.

• [English name?] Dolichonyx kruegeri FISCHER & BURKHARDT 1971 (in Swedish: kubabobolink)
Fischer, K-H & S Burkhard. 1971. Weitere Vogelreste aus dem Pleistozän der Pio-Domingo-Höhle in Kuba. Wissenschaftliche Zeitschrift der Humboldt-Universität Berlin, Math.-Naturwiss. Reihe 20 (4-5): 593-607.

Do you, or anyone else, know where to find them digitized?

The ODs of Aepyornis hildebrandti and Neochen barbadiana seems especially hard to find!

Björn

I have spme of these titles:

Percy Roycroft Lowe, 1931: Struthious Remains from Northern China and Mongolia, with Descriptions of Struthio wimani, Struthio anderssoni and Struthio mongolicus ssp. nov.: Palaeontologia Sinica, ser. C, 2 (4): 5-40 Geological survey of China

Pierce Brodkorb, 1965: Fossil Birds from Barbados, West Indies: Journal of the Barbados Museum and Historical Society 31(1): 3-10

and

Karlheinz Fischer & Burkhard Stephan, 1971: Weitere Vogelreste aus dem Pleistozän der Pio-Domingo-Höhle in Kuba: Wissenschaftliche Zeitschrift der Humboldt-Universität Berlin, Math.-Nat. R. 20: 593-607

They are indeed very hard to find and I want to ask a friend for permission to send them to you.

The Aepyornis papers I am still looking for.

I woll send you an e-mail about it soon!

All the best,

Fred Ruhe

Dorothea M. A. Bate, 1931: With a Note on Remains of Carinate Birds: Palaeontologia Sinica, ser. C, 2 (4): 41-47 Geological survey of China

• Hildebrandt's Elephant Bird Aepyornis hildebrandti BURCKHARDT 1893 (in Swedish: Hildebrandts elefantfågel)

• Gracile Elephant Bird Aepyornis gracilis MONNIER 1913 (in Swedish: spenslig elefantfågel)
Monnier, L. 1913. Paléontologie de Madagascar. VII. Les Aepyornis. Annales de Paléontologie 8: 125–172.
Snippets can be seen [here], but I find nothing else. If what you're after is a simple explanation of the name, the author says:
Comme le caractère qui saute aux yeux est d'être moins massif que les os correspondants des trois autres espèces, nous avons pensé que l'on pourrait donner à cette nouvelle espèce le nom de Aep. gracilis.
(As the character that jumps out is being less massive than the corresponding bones of the three other species, we thought that one might give to this new species the name of Aep. gracilis.)

Thanks guys! You´re more than helpful.

And the good thing; the only one left; Monnier, L.1913. Paléontologie de Madagascar. VII. Les Aepyornis. Annales de Paléontologie 8 ... is apparently to be found in the holdings of the Stockholm University Library! I could´nt find it at first ... but there it was (if one spell it correctly). ;)

I´ll go there next week!

Any additional info found in these papers will appear in future threads in the Bird Name Etymology Forum. This said without having any expectations of finding anything new or contradictory regarding their etymology. The main reason for wanting them was basically to double-check what´s written in full, in the ODs themselves, and to find some dates, years and locations (simply to make my MS a bit richer).

Once again: many thanks! :t:

The Aepyornis papers I am still looking for.
I now have all the Papers I was looking for in Post #1!

And Fred, I can send you a copy of "Monnier, L. 1913. Paléontologie de Madagascar; VII. — Les Æpornis" if you want it for yourself? It´s quite a large pdf (photocopied, scanned and inserted); 12,2 MB. Too big to post here, or in BirdForum's Private Messages. But there's always regular mail (if your server can handle it)!

This also goes for anyone else interested, just let me know? If so; use Private Message, and forward me an regular e-mail-address.

If not: hildebrandti, gracilis, anderssoni, barbadiana & kruegeri ... over and out!

Björn

PS. A sneak-peak at Aepyornis gracilis below!
