Ecological impact of linking the Danube to the Aegean? (1 Viewer)

As reported in ekathimerini today (Aug 28, 2017), the Chinese want to link the Danube to the Aegean Sea at the Axios River Delta (one of Greece's important bird areas). The article is at: http://www.ekathimerini.com/221159/...make-plan-to-link-danube-and-aegean-a-reality

My instinctive reaction is that this will be an ecological disaster--am I wrong? What are the environmental impacts of such a project likely to be? How will it affect birds?

If, as I think, this is a bad idea ecologically, what can be done to protest it?
