Tel Aviv in January (1 Viewer)

I will be travelling to Tel Aviv in early January. Time will be limited and I will not have transport.

Please could someone advise what species I may be able to see around the coast/beach area at this time of year?

Are there any good birding spots around the Tel Aviv area?

many thanks
kevin

Unfortunately, it is not treated by the bird finding guides I have.

I've been told that Yafo/Jaffa harbour can be good for pelagic species when there’s a storm (e.g. Yelkouan Shearwater). This part of town used to be reasonably green and (culturally) interesting, and held e.g. White-spectacled Bulbul. I'm not sure if the introduced Common Myna has replaced it by now. Palestine Sunbird should be there as well. I guess larger parks would hold Syrian Woodpecker (maybe head for Yarkon park?)

Check the gulls: Armenian is the most common one, but Great Black-headed should be possible! Locating a rubbish dump would help...

It might be worth your while to ask for help on http://groups.yahoo.com/group/israbirdnet/
