Saw this duck swimming with a large group of Tufted ducks. Any ideas on origins or whether it is just faulty pigmentation of the plumage?

I reckon your right about the pigmentation idea, as it looks like a normal Tufted to me in all other aspects. ie; head shape right, with long crest. Bill looks normal to me with the right "dipped in ink tip" unlike Scaup. Thats my opinion anyway, we'll see what others think.

That's my thinking on this one too, though no doubt one of the duck experts will be able to confirm if it is a hybrid.

The duck look leucistic, its uniformly pale moverall but otherwise looks normal. Interesting bird and nice photo!

To me also, leucistic Tufted duck!

everything in body and head shape says Tufted duck...

But what I find especially odd is the pinkish base of the bill!
