Pools........25 Mallard, 5 Little Grebe, 2 Teal, 4 Coot, 2 Canada Goose, 12 Moorhen, 16 Tufted Duck, 2 Gadwall, 1 Shoveler, 2 Great Crested Grebe, and 3 Green Sandpiper.


1 Coal Tit, 600+ Starling, 265+ Black Tailed Godwit, 2 Great White Egret, 1 Grasshopper Warbler, 2 Avocet, 3 Ringed Plover, 1 Cetti's Warbler, 2 Rock Pipit, and 15 Mistle Thrush, were other birds of note.


17 Common Sandpiper, were counted at the roost.

1 Cetti's Warbler, 1 Peregrine Falcon, 1 Whimbrel, 1 Avocet, 1 Dunlin, and 2 Bullfinch, were also noted.


8 Common Sandpiper, were at the roost.

Pools.........2 Common Sandpiper, 17 Tufted Duck, 6 Moorhen, 1 Cattle Egret ( the 1st time that this species, has been recorded on the pools themselves, all other records have involved flyovers only ) 4 Coot, 4 Little Grebe, 8 Mallard, 50+ Lapwing, 6 Teal, and 1 Green Sandpiper.


35+ Little Egret, 1 Great White Egret, and 2 Barnacle Goose, were also noted.

2 Black Swan, 1 Wheatear ( juv ), 35+ Little Egret, 1 Yellow Wagtail, ( a mixed flock of 300+ Linnet/Goldfinch ), 3 Kestrel, 80+ Stock Dove, 1 Great Spotted Woodpecker, and 1 Ringed Plover, were also noted.


Adjacent Saltmarsh/Estuary.........2 Greenshank, 150+ Black Tailed Godwit, and 3000+ Redshank.

400+ Jackdaw, 50+ Rook, 1 Rock Pipit, 2 Black Swan, 2 Great White Egret, 22 Meadow Pipit, 30+ Goldfinch, 1 Tree Pipit, 3 Cetti's Warbler, 120+ Swallow, 10+ House Martin, 2 Great Spotted Woodpecker, 20+ Linnet, 4 Jay, 6 Goldcrest, 1 Hobby, 1 Peregrine Falcon, 100+ Canada Goose, 30+ Stock Dove, 12 Pied Wagtail, 1 Coal Tit, 1 Wheatear, 15+ Magpie, 2 Reed Bunting, 2 Bullfinch, 2 Marsh Harrier, and also, 1 Ring Ouzel ( female ), which was noted feeding on berries, amongst other thrush's, and blackbirds.

**** Help with ID please****

1 'marsh tern', was noted at distance on Shotton/Burton Marsh this morning, at circa 08.15am - 09.00am.......... and common sense tells me, that it was very probably a Black Tern,.... but.....it did appear to be showing very pale/white undersides, and was also much paler above than I would have expected from a Black Tern..........it's a bit of a long shot I know......but is there any chance of it having been a White Winged Black Tern, or is it too early/late for one of these to be passing through?.........

1 Tawny Owl was heard.


Birds noted as 'flyovers' or passing through.......2 Marsh Harrier, 3 Great White Egret, 9 Little Egret, 350+ Pink Footed Goose, 2 Black Swan, 3 Siskin, 3 Rock Pipit, 1 Merlin, and 20+ Dunlin.


2 Short Eared Owl, were noted on the adjacent saltmarsh.


Other notable birds....... 1 'marsh tern' ( probable Black Tern ), 2 Raven, 7 Skylark, 2 Great Spotted Woodpecker, 2 Cetti's Warbler, 8 Meadow Pipit, 2 Coal Tit, 60+ Woodpigeon, 2 Reed Bunting, and 2 Bullfinch.

2 Little Stint, were noted feeding amongst the Lapwing flock, on the 'shallow pool' at first light,.... a very good record.


1000+ Starling, were at the roost.


5 Jay, were at the Feeding Station.


The first returning Goldeneye, was noted on the 'Main Pools'.

( 05/04/18 ), 1 Sand Martin, ( 2017 arrival date 06/04/17 ).
( 08/04/18 ), 12 Swallow, ( 2017 arrival date 06/04/17 ).

*** Surprisingly,......still no Common Whitethroat recorded at Shotton,........( 2017 arrival date 01/04/17 ) ***



Black Headed Gull colony held 250+ birds.


2 Little Owl, were perched close to the adjacent riverbank.


Pools.......6 Coot, 6 Moorhen, 15 Mallard, 37 Tufted Duck, 10 Gadwall, 22 Teal, 22 Canada Goose, 4 Little Grebe, 2 Oystercatcher, 2 Greenshank, 2 Great Crested Grebe, 1 Cormorant, 2 Shelduck, 1 Grey Heron, and 1 Common Sandpiper.


4 Cetti's Warbler were heard.
