Hey Tom, it wouldn't matter how good your book was if you were looking in the SandPIPERS section instead of the PLOVERS section, even though they are close. I find it interesting that you have been a member for 3 years and yet your post number is 1. How did you do that?

I don't look at the Forum very often hence yesterday was my first post. Just very saddened that somebody could take such a good shot of a common bird but didn't know what they were photographing!

Hi Tom,

We welcome all comers in the ID forum. They are a diverse lot from expert birders to novices to people who love nature and photography but know little of the intricacies of bird ID. I don't really see anything sad about someone not knowing the ID of even a common bird. I think the important thing is that they care what the ID is.

Best,
Jim

Good point. My primary interest is photography, not birding, but I always like to be able to identify what it is I am photographing hence my occasional presence on this forum. Identification for me includes not only birds, for which this forum is the best place for an answer, but also plants, buildings, people, and other subjects. Although I have developed a mild interest in birding over time, my interest in photography remains much greater.

Oddly enough, one of the last birds for which I sought an ID on this forum also turned out to be a Black-bellied Plover.

Jack
