Several members have posted comments or questions about vagrant winter hummingbirds.

Although winter hummers apparently were extremely unusual in the past, we are encountering more and more in the eastern U.S.--especially Rufous Hummingbirds, Selasphorus rufus.

If you know of ANY hummers in the eastern U.S. after mid-October, please report them to mailto:[email protected]

You can read all about winter hummingbirds--and how to care for them--on the Web site for Hilton Pond Center for Piedmont Natural History, specifically at

Happy (Winter) Hummingbird Watching!

BILL

Hey Bill
Had a S. rufous juvenile male here in the pines up until the middle of November. Have not seen or heard him since the flooding.

Bastrop, TX

PS You may want to keep an eye on TXHUMMER (same location as Texbirds). Several hummingbirds being reported currently.

Rufous, Allen's, Black-chinned, Buff-bellied and Ruby-throated have all been reported and/or banded this winter in Tallahassee. Fred Bassett of the Hummingbird Study Group regularly visits to band our hummers.
