I'm going to be in LA , staying in Santa Monica for two days next week. Any suggestions for a couple of places nearby to go birding . I won't have a car.

Neil-

Right in Santa Monica, a walk down to the beach is the first stop. It's miles of sandy beach, so you'll be mostly seeing the usual gulls, pelicans, and shorebirds. Beyond that, I'd suggest either heading up into the hills, like Will Rogers State Park, or go down to Ballona Wetlands, on the other side of Marina Del Rey. You could probably take public transit down the Ballona Wetlands, but I'm not exactly sure how to solve that puzzle.

Neil,
I had a few hours free before my flight home when I visited LA on business in late June 2009.

I took a taxi down to Playa del Rey as already suggested and there were plenty of birds to see around the beach and entrance to the marina. Also Allen's and Anna's HBs commonplace around the hotel gardens.

A trip up into the hills would have been nice but I didn't have the time unfortunately.
