6x30 bins: anyone seen one of these? (1 Viewer)

I know there are some fans of 6x magnification out there. My eldest brother showed me his old bins recently, they're Japanese-made, 6x30, remarkably sharp and bright but with very narrow FOV for the mag. Bought in 1964 for four pounds, bearing the name "Luna" and the serial number 190007. I just wondered if any antique bino-buffs have ever seen a pair. (They were the first bins I ever birded with as a kid, but I hadn't seen them since about 1973 until he showed me them recently!)

I wouldn't have said 7.5° was narrow, Sancho. They probably have short eye relief; maybe that's what's affecting the view for you?

Is it that much? Yeah, it seemed narrower to me, either an optical illusion or a senior moment. Nice little bins, though, and still great after 44 years!

I don't think THIS is a senior moment, Sancho ;). Apparent FOV is 7.5° x 6 = 45°, which "looks" narrow to almost everybody. The "true" FOV is quite wide due to low power though. And such narrow eyepieces are quite easy to make optically good.

Best regards,

Ilkka

:t:Thanks Ilkka!

This doesn't gel with my experience, which is admittedly limited and possibly not perfectly processed. I have a pair of bins with a 48° AFOV and the view "looks" or "feels" gorgeously wide. It isn't, of course, as I sometimes find when trying to get on a bird in the bush. The 6° FOV is a real limitation but it's not a perceived limitation. Another bin I tried recently had an AFOV of 50.4°, but "looked" and "felt" extremely narrow. The difference was that the first bin has a perfect-for-me ER of 16.5mm. The second bin, a Nikon, claims to have an ER of 15.5mm, but I think it's one of those that Nikon specialise in with a real ER of -√(∏/∞).
