Sunday bird walk, February 12, 2017
The Sunday bird walk went to Neck Point Park in Nanaimo. The morning was mostly sunny and warm with calm winds—a pleasant change from the last few weeks! Surfbirds and Black Turnstones were seen on the rocks just off shore. A Brandt’s Cormorantwas preening itself on the big rocks at the point. A flock of Black Oystercatchers flew past singing very loudly. Six Common Murre, Horned Grebe, Red-necked Grebe, Pacific Loons and Common Loons were seen further offshore.
Ten birders saw and heard the following thirty-four species:

Red-necked Grebe
Surf Scoter
Bufflehead
Common Merganser
Red-breasted Merganser
Pacific Loon
Common Loon
Pelagic Cormorant
Brandt’s Cormorant

Thayer's Gull
Glaucous-winged Gull
Belted Kingfisher
Surfbird
Black Turnstone
Black Oystercatcher
Bald Eagle
Hairy Woodpecker
Northern Flicker
American Robin
Varied Thrush
Anna’s Hummingbird
Bewick’s Wren
Pacific Wren
Golden-crowned Kinglet
Chestnut-backed Chickadee
Fox Sparrow
Song Sparrow

Tuesday, February 07.
The Tuesday bird walk was cancelled due to the weather.

A White-throated Sparrow was seen along Buttertubs Drive by the river behind the townhouses in Nanaimo.

Monday, February 06.
A Snow Goose was seen at the Parksville Community Park in Parksville.

Two Great Horned Owls were seen in a tree on the Ridge above Colbourne Drive in Nanaimo.

The Tuesday bird walk on February 14, 2017 will be going to Columbia Beach. Meet at the Parksville Community Park at the parking lot near the Lions Club Playground at 9:00 a.m. or at the parking area off Admiral Tryon Blvd. (off Highway 19a and Columbia Drive) at about 9:20 a.m.

The Sunday bird walk on February 19, 2017 will be going Rathtrevor Beach Provincial Park in Parksville. Meet at the Birdstore at 9:00 a.m. or at the main parking lot at Rathtrevor Park at about 9:25 a.m
