Hit-and-run WUM
All,
I'm hoping you can help me with a bird I saw at lunchtime today.
It was amongst a small flock of Ringed Plover and immediately stood out as different. The most obvious features were it's size, being smaller and 'slighter', than the RPs with an obviously paler panel on the wing - it appeared to be moulting into 1st winter plumage which struck me as being late in the year (?). The bill didn't seem any shorter than the RPs but was perhaps slimmer.
Infact it was more like a LRP in jizz.
During the observation time the bird was constantly harrassed by the Ringed Plovers, but (and this is a BIG but) wasn't heard to call. I think I saw some small webbing and I may have a photo showing it (unfortunately I'm now back in work and can't upload the photos until later.). Although I'm not ruling out wishful thinking!
I didn't note an eyering and the photos seem to bear out it's absence.
Perhaps it was a tundrae Ringed Plover, perhaps it was a Semi-'P'.
Others are looking for the bird at the moment (it was flushed into the harbour area by someone walking the beach).
Your thoughts would be greatly appreciated.
