Apols for the blurry pic, it was very windy!

This trees leaves are similar to oak leaves but the the seed things looked a bit like spiky young double conkers or even hazelnuts.

Never seen it before and just wondered what it was.

Thanks for your help.

Regards,

c

It's an oak (Quercus sp.) but someone else will come up with the exact ID.
The "seed things" are actually galls, an "allergic reaction" from the tree, caused by a tiny wasp-like insect.

Turkey Oak Quercus cerris. Native to southern Europe & SW Asia, frequently naturalised (& sometimes invasive) in Britain.

The 'seed things' are actually young acorns - in Turkey Oak the acorns take 18 months to mature, these are young ones that will be ripe in October 2018.

I thought you'd reply to this one. Very interesting information and very happy to be corrected on the "seed things" I honestly thought were galls! I was so convinced I didn't even check any sources! Apologies to SADLERC1 for my obviously uninformed reply. Cheers to both

Thanks Nutcracker and Rafael. All input gratefully received and a bit of discussion along the way makes it interesting! Ta c
