Hi,

I took these two photos in Devon in August. Is it just a common Whimbrel?

Did you see it better with binoculars? If so, can you tell us so more detailed characteristics? I can't quite tell from the pictures.

edit: Looking more closely at the pictures, it does look quite like a common whimbrel.

Hi.

Helm Field Guide: Waders of Europe, Asia and North America.
"A narrow pale median crown stripe is not always obvious"

The Devil Bird "Stronger facial pattern suggests Whrimbrel rather than curlew."

I agree.

Edit: HFG Does not say is always present.

Thank you all for answering,
I initially heard it call but it was so strange I had to look at the bird to id it. It was a mix between a Curlew and a faint Stone curlew! The head was quite light in colour but with pretty dark facial patterns, a crown stripe and a thin beak.
