Closest match in my guide (Kaufman) was a Greater Yellowlegs.

Any ideas?

I'd just about buy that...it has the Greenshanky character I associate with Greaterlegs :)

Without diving ito a book I don't recall if there any especially useful plumage features on a head on view to distinguish from Lesser Legs.

I'd say Greater Yellowlegs as well. According to the Sibley guide the Lesser has 'mostly unmarked flanks' while the Greater has 'extensive dark bars on flanks.'
