does anyone know some good locations for bluethroats within an hours drive of Neusiedlersee? (someone mentioned Hohenau). and when do they arrive in the spring?
thanks in advance!

Bluethroat and Penduline Tit, I saw years ago at Pusztasteg Illmitz, near ferry station.
Otherwise check ornitho.at and look for Blaumeise in the time when You travelling.

e.g.
http://www.ornitho.at/

choice rigth "Letzte 15 Tage" means last 15 days
choice top "Burgenland"
choice "ND" for Neusiedler See

Also, Bluethroats arrive quite early in spring, compared to other insectivorous migrants. Here in the north, one can find them as early as late March, so in Austria, they'll be present even before that.

You mean Blaukehlchen ;) ("Blaumeise" means Blue Tit)

I stayed in Weiden several times and there is a footpath/cycle path that runs by the lake/reeds, I have had Bluethroats and Penduline Tits nests hanging down over the path.
The Bluethroat song is quite distinctive and this helps to see them, I have also seen them ay Ilmitz and Apetlon.
(Just outside village of Neusiedle there is a good place for Ortolans)

Merlin

Is this possible without previously entering x sightings? Ornitho.de and ornitho.pl at least are annoyingly restrictive in that regard :-(

For newly registered users, ornitho.at is the same as .de in that it restricts searching the database for records in the past 15 days only. So no research ahead, but once there it is very useful.
