Migrating bird seen at night 5 meters in the air? (1 Viewer)

On April 14th, I was in upstate New York getting in my car when a bird flew 5 meters above my head. I am fully confident that it was a bird, considering it flew like a bird and had white outer tail feathers. I am fully aware that birds migrate at night. I thought they flew several hundred feet above the ground, however. Could this be of a non-regular reason, such as a lack of energy? Many thanks.
