Jan 31, Summit Doi Inathon, Chiang Mai, Thailand

The birding day finished with a drive up through near white-out cloud/fog and drizzle that cleared around the 43km milestone to the summit of Doi Inathon and the highest point in Thailand at 2565masl.

Due to the poor conditions only two new birds were seen on the way up from a road side stop just before the fog lifted.

282. Mountain Bulbul
283. Spectacled Barwing

Having reached the summit we did a couple of laps of the Sphagnum Bog trail before walking over the summit to the view point by the telecom tower which showed nothing but cloud below! As expected plenty of friendly birds but hardly any good shots due to poor light and in some cases the birds being too close!

284. Flavescent Bulbul
285. Hill Blue Flycatcher

Feb 2, Doi Inathon, Chiang Mai, Thailand

Today the longish drive from Doi Inathon to Chiang Saen up on the Thai/Laos border.

The day started though with a commotion in the trees above the tent just after dawn had me looking in the tree tops up the hill - walking up towards the area I first spooked a Mountain Scops Owl, which was presumably the one calling during the night, and where the noise of angry birds was coming from was a Collared Owlet

Feb 4, Chiang Saen to Chiang Dao, Northern Thailand

Time to start heading back towards Chiang Mai since we need to hand the car back at the airport around lunchtime tmw. Rather than spend the last night in Chiang Mai opt to spend it at Chiang Dao which is an hour or so north of Chiang Mai.

We head back out to Chiang Saen Lake first thing in the hope of convincing someone to take us out on the lake for awhile to see the wintering ducks which stay more on the far side. Unfortunately no one was interested so no Baer's Pochard which I knew was out there and my main target. Compensation was in the form of two lifers!

382. Green-eared Barbet
383. Spot-winged Starling

We drove south via the agricultural valley of Tha Thon rather than the direct route with the odd stop to admire the scenery and open country bird!

384. Common Buzzard
385. Richard's Pipit
386. Striated Grassbird
387. Jerdon's Bush Chat

I spent some time sitting on the balcony reading a book and examining the regular flocks of swifts and swiftlets for anything out of the ordinary. The common swiftlets here are Germain's and Black-nest but also Glossy and visiting Himalayan should be around.

Didn't see any Glossy or Himalayan but I did convince myself after some looking that I most likely had a Black-nest picked out from the more common Germain's.
