Thailand, Bangkok, crows (1 Viewer)

Hi all

Go easy on me, am from NZ and we don't have crows like this there, or in Vietnam where I now live. The combination of flat foreheads and curved beaks in two of these do not really match any crows in Robson (Birds of SE Asia).

Thanks in advance!

W.

Large-billed Crow for me. Definitely not a House Crow - default in a lot of Sth East Asia but wouldn't consider it so in Thailand

Looks like the carrion crow one sees in India (Corvus corone; race-orientalis). The orientalis race of carrion crow is differentiated from the large bill crow (or jungle crow) by its flat head and slender bill. Please see an example here "http://www.birding.in/birds/Passeriformes/Corvidae/carrion_crow.htm". Do you remember what it sounded like (typically a harsher kah kah than the house crow).

If I sound terribly knowledgeable, its because I am transcribing off "a field guide to the birds of the Indian subcontinent". The first line is mine though.

Good luck.

I agree that most lists don't include carrion crows in Thailand. But one cannot be so didatic. They are in Myanmar (a hop-skip and jump away). If all birds stuck to lists in books, there will be no twitching. Maybe birds can't read.

Joking apart if there is a reason (by physical appearance) why pictures 1 and 3 are not of a carrion crow, I would like to know for my own education.
