Pipits on rocks at sea edge. I suppose they are rock pipits but would appreciate explanation of how they differ from meadow.

Yes, all Rock Pipits. A few differences from Meadow:

1. Darker legs
2. Underpart streaking thicker, smudgier and browner - not the neat black streaking of Meadow
3. Face a bit plainer, giving is a distinctly 'sulky' look.

Here's a Meadow Pipit for comparison alan....flesh coloured legs, very long hind claw, generally smaller and cleaner looking below and above.

The more "portly" shape of Rock Pipit is a good pointer in comparison with the slimmer Meadow (and Tree) Pipit and I always think its darker colour, together with the more blurry streaking, give the plumage a characteristically "smokey" appearance.
