Advice for Nikon Binocs (1 Viewer)

Hello dear Birdforum.net Community,

I've been thinking to buy a monocular first. After I registered this forum I got rid off that idea and encouraged to buy a binocular by a forum member, thanks to him :)

I can see that Nikon binoculars are not so much expensive but in well-quality(Have no experience, but nice brand). Every step of choosing optics is almost nightmare for me, there are many choices and I can't try them on hand because I will order it online. The question is that "Which Nikon is suitable for me,- birding , observing the nature, sometimes on the sea and also night view?" Nikon Action Ex 7x50's relative brightness is 50.4. Is it good or bad ? Seems like to much.

1.http://www.bhphotovideo.com/c/product/319410-USA/Nikon_7239_7x50_Action_EX_Extreme.html - It's a bit heavy , I don't know whether big problem or not. What is the difference between Action EX and CF? I found it in Turkish website: http://www.teknosa.com/urunler/135175600/nikon-action-7x50cf-durbun

2.http://www.bhphotovideo.com/c/product/910765-REG/nikon_8245_8x42_aculon_a211.html or another Aculon you can suggest.

If you are going to do all those things you list I suggest you consider the Nikon 7x35 Action Extreme ATB. It will be lighter in weight and have a much wider field of view. It also has nice long eye relief if you will be using it while wearing glasses. There isn't that much difference between 7x and 8x for any of your activities and the wide view will help.

Hello Bob,
Thank you for your reply. As I said I'm just a starter, I will always use this binocular for many purposes till I create budget for better one. I've read that 50mm lens can gather light better and provide better view at night or low light areas. I don't wear eyeglasses. I really don't know which one to buy. At last I can see further with 7x50, right ? Since I've never used a binocular I won't know to catch the object...

I agree with Bob. I have the 7x35 Aculon and have tried the 7x35 EX. The EX isn't as heavy as the others in the series, and it has less field curvature than the Aculon (i.e., more of the image is in sharp focus in the center without having to refocus the edges). Good starter bin.

Also check out the Leupold 6x30 Yosemite, if you can buy those in Turkey. It's also a nice starter bin.

Alp,

You won't see further with a 7x50 but you likely will be able to see things earlier in the morning and later in the evening than with the other 2 binoculars because it gathers more light. This might add 10 minutes or more time to use them for birding and such.

I still think your best all around choice is the 7x35.

Hello Brock,
Firstly I decided to buy a Aculon then I've changed my mind to Action Extreme. I don't know why, but there is no Leupold on Turkish optics websites. Plus, I can't get it from online because of the gov. restrictions. I can buy every brand of binocular from online but not Leupold. It's strange.

OK. Thank you so much Bob, you've been very helpful. I can't find any EX of 7x35 on shopping websites. It's too hard to find the item that I mostly wanted in Turkey. I decided to purchase nikon action ex 7x35 but there is no EX, no fogproof, waterproof....

Edit: I've found Olympus 10x50 DPS I binocular. What do you think for this one ?

Alpse,

I can't help you with Olympus binoculars. I've never used any. Optically the 7x35 Aculon that Brock mentions isn't too much different from the 7x35 Action Extreme. They aren't waterproof and cost less because of that.

Bob

I've totally misunderstood the FOV. Now Everthing is revealed :) It seems it will be hard to find 7x35 Aculon in Turkey. Can Nikon Aculon 8x42 subsitute for 7x35 ? It has 140m FOV against 163...

Leupold Yosemite 6x30 seconded. Also known as Kowa YF 6x30 if the Leupold is not available.

Alp,

Yes it can do so without any problem. You might even like it better. 140m @ 1000m is considered a wide FOV. The 7x35 has a very wide FOV. The 8x40 does have short eye relief of 12mm but that should not bother you if you don't wear spectacles.

It always helps if you can try a binocular out before you decide to purchase it but sometimes it is not possible to do. Here is link to it from the Nikon USA website.

Good luck with your new binocular, Alpse :t:

Snow and fog won't hurt it if you keep the binocular dry while not using it. Keep the ocular covers on it until you need to use it in conditions like that.

One other thing you should expect. The view you get while using it will not be sharp out to the edge. You will be able to focus it into sharpness if you need to do it but then the center will be out of focus. It is a better idea to move the binocular to center on something you might see out of the corner of your eyes.

Experiment with it. If you look into a tree not far from you will find that it seems the whole view is sharp but the far edges will be in a different plane of sharpness than those in the center of the view are. That is one reason why this kind of binocular can be good for following birds through trees.

When you look at objects at infinity everything should be sharp except very close to the edge of the view.
