Grey Heron sketch (1 Viewer)

Vectis Birder

Itchy feet
Here's a Grey Heron sketch I did not so long ago. Unfortunately it's not scanned that well, and I'm not that brilliant with Photoshop I'm afraid.
Hope you like it!
Birds like Herons are easy to do as they stay still for long periods of time, enabling me to get more done. This is one of the rare occasions I've managed to get some detail in!

Great fieldwork VB. Both sketchs are bang on anatomy wise and contrary to what you say Grey Heron is not the easiest bird to get right with neck extended, despite the habit of standing motionless for us to draw!

Well done!

(I can just make out the black headed gulls on the other side of the page!! Possibly the most sketched bird in Europe???) ;)

Oh yeah...I can see 'em too, now you've mentioned it. A bit like 'artist's thumb' is the overprocessing of the scan revealing what's on the previous page... 3:)

Lovely these are, VB. You've managed to retain a whole lotta jizz with these drawings (a difficult subject as Alan and Gill have said). I've just been looking through one of my old sketchbooks of some drawings of golden plover. Like you I thought, Great, they're staying still - must be easy to draw - the result, overworked rubbish!
- Yours, on the otherhand have retained a liveliness to which the detail adds, not detracts. Go and do some more!!!!!!
Ace.

Beautiful loose style and correct depiction of such a difficult bird form!
Have more to show?

Spizaetos

Excellent stuff Vectis I like it a lot. Herons are lovely graceful birds with some thing of a sculptural quality and you've captured that nicely. Look forward to more.
