Great group of sketches, Russ! Very nice variety of poses you've captured. And, I think your wet media sketches are looking really good.

My favourites are the Tern preening/resting studies...
Truly exquisite and evocative of the experience...very Lars! (But also very Russ!;))

Cheers, people.

A few more from a few weeks ago. Statuesque tuftie done for no other reason other than it was something different, BHG, and from the not-very-demanding to the extremely so: turnstones, dunlin and redshanks feeding away. Forever trying to keep things loose but seing that tortoiseshell pattern on turnstones makes it difficult to focus on owt else. I was amazed at the sizes of the stones they actually turn, too!
Some snoozing redshank studies to finish.

Five more monochrome wc's - BHG, Ringed Plover, Little Owl, Curlew and LBBG. I hope to be illustrating the local breeding atlas, but as ever, I'm unsure how these will handle the printing process - probably crap as usual. Still, my glorious struggle goes on; I mostly pleased with the Lbbg - my tribute to Lars! He wouldn't have stuck a thick black line around it though; something I almost can't help, but I do like bold lines - I think it's called expressing yourself, aint it?

Comments, criticisms all taken on the chin - have no fear!

Russ

These are really getting RICH! There's such a lot of variety in line weight, texture, tones all on top of a very solid structure, like you really know the birds now and can afford to be a bit loose and expressive in your renderings.

I think they're just great. For me it's the dunlin that seems impossible, especially if it's passed breeding plumage, just these brownish blobs with a hint of dip in their bills........

Another great volume of work here, Russ! I particularly like the turnstone studies...great variety of positions, and lots of movement in them.

Excellent! A day's birding for us without having to get up early and go to a reserve!

Love the shouting BHG and of course the little owl.

Mike

Cheers,
Going through a coot phase presently, so spending a lot of time sketching 'em. These are the first of many efforts, usually 'cos there's nowt else to see! I do love the shapes they throw out of the water, though. They are a bit easier on the water, but that facial shield and bill is a bxxxxr to get right. Also preening gadwall, bhg's and two indulgent pieces - dozing 'pintail-less' pintail and adult common gull. The latter is the first summer plumage CG I've had the pleasure to sketch - what a beauty with it's pure clean white head, bright yellow bill and beady eye!

Artists call 'em studies so can I call 'em that too?

Cheers

Russ

Oops, forgot the couple of loafing GCg's, too.

Some really outstanding piecs here Russ - preening gadwall is caught perfectly. That front-on coot is the pick of the lot; great observation of form and light - a cracker, and the two resting birds (pintail and common gull) are beautifully seen. Perhaps the best bunch you've posted here? Keep it up.

Cracking sketches Russ, better and better everytime. My favourite has to be the coot in number five of the first post.

One thing though; The reflection of the pintail is all wrong! It looks like a coot! ;)
