California Towhee fledgling (1 Viewer)

I found a California Towhee fledgling this morning hopping around, parents close by and acting defensively. I put my cat in and am wondering if the bird can return to the nest once it's on the ground and not yet flight-worthy. Do I need to leave my cat in until it can fly? Will the parents act differently once the baby can fly? How will I tell otherwise that it is safely fledged?

Welcome to Birdforum!

Yep, best to keep the cat indoors for a few days until the towhee is better able to fly. Actually, best to keep the cat indoors permanently - it'll be healthier and live longer if it does, less chance of disease, and no risk of it coming off second best in a fight with a coyote, or any other wild animal around, or a car for that matter (some info here).
