Birdwatcher in Oz
Last night this was on the news:
It seems that the new airport(Eleftherios Venizelos) is attracting a lot of birds and this has resulted with many sucked into turbines.
Officials, though they expected some birds, were suprised with the number of birds that turned up this summer, ome of them were quite rare for Attica as well. The report showed Eleonora's Falcon(5 in number) and a White Stork circling above the airport in the company of Magpies and Yellow-legged Gulls.Swifts and Swallows also present in the report.
Officials say that they had to destroy about 100 nests this spring from the main and building and air filed and had to use trained birds of prey to scare of the birds that were attracted to the flood waters...(Species not mentioned...but could include some rare species). They also use speakers that play the alarm call of various species so that they can spook them off.(though they've noticed that it isn't as effective as it was in the past...)
So if you by any chance pop by our new Airport,be sure you check the skys with your huge scope. You never know what might be flying about and you will give the police something to have fun with...
BTW.Why are birds attracted to airports anyway?
