Catskills New York // Difficulty in Old Forests (1 Viewer)

Well, took a day off Friday and drove the 150 mile trip to the Catskills (Slide Mtn). Had a disappointing few days in that only spotted a few chickadees, a Hairy Woodpecker, and an unidentified (as of yet, see ID forum) thrush.

I noted that birding in old forests is difficult as the canopy is simply too high to facilitate good vision. Any thoughts on overcoming this (besides growing to be 20 ft tall!!)?
