Fantastic photos!

For me the bird is a Water Pipit. I would've thought that japonicus would have darker, heavier streaking on the breast and flanks and a really obvious malar patch. The back is quite heavily marked and in japonicus it is usually fairly plain. On this bird the legs are obviously dark whereas they are usually pale (pinkish) on Buff-bellied. Finally, the eye-ring doesn't seem to be quite complete.

Hi Wittmann - if you did pick up a Buff-bellied Pipit in Xinjiang they'd be somewhat of a rarity. This is a species of NE Asia that migrates down the east of China and winters in Southern China. If one got as far west as Xinjiang then they'd be way off their normal passage range.
Where as Water Pipit is a breeding bird for Xinjiang.

PS - is that bird with the clean breast, in your last pictures, being fed by the second bird?
