April 13, 2015

We bought the chicken and put down the camera on April 9th. Surprisingly, three days later the camera took a picture of a wild boar in forest. It was the first time we ever saw a wild boar and whole class was excited about it.

Very glad to see that you are finding some wildlife in your trailcam. Keep us posted on what you find evidence of and what you spot on your outings. Give us some of your thoughts about what you are learning and observing and how to use your new knowledge to help China.

On the last Wednesday we had a full day field trip to Zhuanghe. We saw lots of kinds of birds. The most exciting thing is to see Blackfaced Spoonbill. There are only 2000 left in the world and they are only live in Zhuanghe, Honkong, Korea and Taiwan. When we arrive there it was an afternoon, it is real a good time to saw birds after the tide. We saw the Blackfaced Spoonbills were sleeping at high tide. They looks pretty cute. It was a fun day after all. :eat:——made by Catherine

Hello students!

In case others on the forum wonder who you are, I found this link to your school website where it talks about one of your field trips:
http://www.mapleleafschools.com/schools/dalian-mlihs/news_activities.php

I think this class is super and wanted to share my experience with you, to tell you that what you are learning in this class may well become a part of who you are for the rest of your lives.

I took a similar class during my first years at college (1969) called "Natural History of the Vertebrates". Like your class, it focused heavily on birds and we went on many field trips to find and identify the birdlife in our local area. What great adventures those trips were!

Although I never became a passionate bird watcher, I have spent many happy hours outside enjoying watching birds and other wildlife in the years following this class. Later, when I began traveling around the world with my job, I always included a pair of binoculars and a local bird field guide in my luggage, and I had many wonderful adventures. I found, like you will find, that by having a pair of binoculars hanging around my neck, that I met many really nice people in every country I visited.

For example, on the island of Bermuda I met Dr. David Wingate who, almost by himself, saved the very rare Bermuda Petrel (also known as "Cahow') from almost certain extinction. I met him one day at the island's small Natural History museum and expressed my interest in birding. Immediately he offered to take me out the next day by boat to a special island where I could see a a real live Cahow. What a great honor that was! Here is a link to more information about this very rare bird:
http://www.conservation.bm/bermuda-petrel-cahow/

Similar meetings with many kind and generous people happened in almost every place I visited throughout the years. And, all because of that one class. What a wonderful gift my "Natural History of the Vertebrates" teacher gave to me so long ago.

I hope that after you finish your Environmental Wildlife 12 class, you too will also enjoy the many benefits that will surely come to you whenever you tell people that you are interested in wildlife. As you go through life, I think you will discover many reasons to thank your EW12 teachers for the precious gift they have given you.

Warmest regards to you all,

Bruce

Welcome to the forum! I will be watching to hear of what you learn and see.

Becoming aware of the status of the environment around you and why it is that way and what can be done to improve it is the first step towards beginning to help improve it. Observing wild flora and fauna is a great way to begin to truly understand the environment you live in and how to keep it healthy or restore it to health.

Beside all of that, just learning to understand and appreciate the world around you can make you a better, more balanced person.

9.21 Field Trip on the mountain

Yesterday we went to a mountain in a secret place. We climbed on the top of the mountain and viewed from highest point to look at the whole JinShiTan. The experience totally changed our lives. Soon, we saw an Amur Falcon and Red-Rumped swallow fighting in the air. We observed them for a long time, a few minutes later, there was another Amur Falcon joined in. On the way up to the mountain, it was a little bit dangerous. However, everyone in our trips enjoyed it.
