has anyone ever birded in burma? (1 Viewer)

curious as to weather the authorities would even let anyone in.

Some of the more expensive birdtour companies include it in their programmes.

Birdlife International have organised expeditions searching for Pink-headed Ducks twice recently, obviously with government co-operation.

Not sure how you would get on trying to get in for 'normal' birding though. I would not even contemplate it.

A fantastic place to bird and easy to visit, highly recommended.

Several companies offering tours or go direct to a ground agent yourself. Some areas such as Bagan are on the regular tourist circuit and are easily visited independently whereas others such as Mount Victoria require permits and 4WD hire.

Several HK birders have been and had a great time.

You may also be interested to know that Myanmar has recently strengthened its ties with birdLife through closer affiliation (can't rememberthe exact level, but was at the meeting in October last year when BirdLife Asia members voted for this).

Other non-birding friends who have also been recently speak very highly of the friendliness of the people.

There are those who have political reasons for not going, but discussing these in this forum is unlikely to be helpful, so I won't.

The authorities couldn't give a damn what you do as long as you don't threaten their cushy lifestyle. I suppose there are a few areas of the country where you're not allowed, but mostly birding is no problem.

I went there for about two weeks in Feb 01. I'd thoroughly recommend the Mergui archipelago in the south (lots of kingfishers and hornbills) and the boat trip between Pagan and Mandalay (lots of common cranes, various waders). Also made a trip to a place called Myoyingyi not far from Rangoon which was a bit weird but did have plenty of storks and other waterbirds.
