Elephant Hawk moth - not pupating? (1 Viewer)

Found the caterpillar on our patio at the end of August. He finally disappeared into the loose soil about 3 weeks ago. I left it alone until yesterday, thinking that my son and I would now be safe to have a look at the cocoon, however, when I found it, it moved! It would appear that the cocoon hasn't hardened, or even formed? Is this normal? - I'm concerned that I'm not giving it the right conditions.

Any insight valued, thanks.

The pupa is capable of movement, this is very basic and involves the abdomen being moved from side to side. Has the pupal skin hardened? Do you still have the pupa?
