Heron using bread as bait !! (1 Viewer)

I have heard of birds dropping crabs and shellfish from a great height so that they can get inside the shell to eat the contents. I have heard of monkeys using sticks to extract termites but this is a new one for me. Maybe 'bird brain' will need to be reconsidered as an insult! This is a great video of a heron (night heron?) using bread to attract fish within striking range.

its a green heron. This is a very well-documented behaviour for this species (using feathers, bread, etc to attract small fish)

some other interesting tool-using behaviours in birds include New Caledonian crows using twigs to get grubs out of tree holes; Galapagos woodpecker finches doing the same; palm cockatoos using sticks to drum on hollow trees as part of courtship display; bowerbirds using twigs to paint the inside of their bowers with crushed berries or charcoal....lots of really fascinating behaviours out there
