Bill Oddie - are we getting too much of a good thing ? (1 Viewer)

I have to say that I am a huge Bill Oddie fan. His obvious enthusiasm for all of nature make him a pleasure to watch. In fact my children now love to watch his programmes as much as I do and that can only be a good thing. They love to go out walking, looking for birds and animals that they have seen on Bills' programmes. I don't feel that there is too much Bill on TV because I don't think there are that many nature programmes on terrestrial tv full stop. I could definately see more!! B :)

That's a good way to encourage youngsters

I've always liked Bill Oddie presenting wildlife programmes but I really feel that we've now reached the point of overkill. He seems to have inherited either Vorderman or Kaplinsky syndrome; he seems to be on our screens all the time ! Is it just me who's now getting embarrassed by it all ?

I loved 'Birding With Bill Oddie' and 'Bill Oddie Goes Wild' but whenever the BBC shows a major programme about British wildlife, Bill is invariably the presenter. I'm sure there are plenty of other talented presenters out there and I feel that the BBC should spread their load more evenly. I like Mike Dilger and feel that he should be given a try. Gordon Buchanan too perhaps ?

I found myself going through the motions tonight and not really watching the programme as I've just became over familiar with Bill and the others. A new face and things might have been different. Anyone else feel the same ?

Tom

I don't know how long Mr Bill has been on TV but a good analogy would be David Dickenson (wait for the explanation)

He fronted Bargain Hunt for years before it took off massively a couple of years back and hit evening screens on BBC 1 which really surprised me.

For the LONG TERM it is important that the presenter of a specialist programme is both enthusiastic and knowledgable and also a bit of a character which both David and Bill are in their different ways.

In this respect I don't think there is too much Bill Oddie (although Rachel De Thame would be more than welcome to replace him or Kate Humble) just yet as his programmes are not quite top billing yet.

This thread seems to have degenerated into a let's slag off Kate Humble and worship Bill Oddie routine but whilst I tended to agree with most of the sentiments expressed (as a huge fan of BOdd, after all, his Bird Watching with Bill Oddie TV prog started me off as a bird watcher, plus the fact that in in his early days his local patch (Bartley Green Reservoir) was overlooked by my Grammar School I was brought down to earth by the Beebs new series which started last night "Amazon Abyss'.
It appears that the much maligned Kate, who appears in the programme, is a fully qualified diver and in last nights episode she dived into the Amazon river, where visibilty was less than a few inches, knowing that she was in the presence of dogfish that are capable of removing a human limb, electric eels that are capable of generating an electric shock at 600 volts, Pirhanas, and man eating Cayman and Anaconda.

In an edition of Bill Oddie Goes Wild, Bill was absolutely paranoid in the episode where he was expected to don a wet suit and 'float' with seals. Perhaps we need to reassess our opinions of the Lady.

Further episodes of Amazon Abyss are on BBC1 every night this week at 7.00 pm.

Although it may be of no interest as far as birdwatching is concerned it is interesting to see the 'bird' we have been criticising in a different light.

Dave
Kate Humble was re labled as a naturalist by the narrator on last weeks Amazon Abyss despite the fact that she stated(with great authority)that vampire bats used modified CANINES to bloodlet(rather than incisors)too much hammer horror maybe? She also seemed shocked about an ant that smelt of acid!!(why did sse think that the family was called Formicidae? or did she know that in the first place?)Some naturalist!!

Aren't you being a bit unfair on Kate? OK, I admit I'm biased, but she strikes me as a game, "prepared to have a go at anything" girl. The BBC needs people like that. And let's face it, if you had to make a living out of the BBC, would you turn down a job offer, just because it meant co-hosting with Bill? No disrespect to Bill, who's great, of course. The real problem to my mind is just that the two of them are mismatched. I'm sure there's a nature audience for Kate - it's just not the erudite lot that we are. ;)
