columbia birder

We're new to birding and have an identification challenge. We live in central Maryland and our house backs to 100+ acres of woods. In the last few weeks, we've seen a bird that we can't identify. It looks like a cardinal (entirely red with red/pink bill) except that it has no crest and it's entire head (crown, nape, cheek, throat) is gray/black. The bill looks like that of a grosbeak or finch. Any help?
Thanks!
