Thrush, Romania.
This one has me confused, but it's probably straightforward - young mistle, young fieldfare, or? Seen at approx 1700m in the Carpathians.
Thanks!

Hi James,
When did you take this photo? I don't think it's a female Ring Ouzel; more likely a juvenile. But do the feathers look juvenile? Also, how would we rule out Blue Rock Thrush from this photo? Do they occur where this shot was taken? Cheers, Andy. |

definitely looks like a fledgling to me due to the gape
seems to match the juvenile ring ouzel here http://www.johnoliverphotography.co.uk/page9.htm quite well, particularly in terms of the vermiculated underparts but i can see where andy is coming from with the blue rock thrush idea james |

The bill structure is wrong for BRT, also the pronounced white edging to the wing feathers is almost certainly typical of alpestris. I can recollect on a once only occasion..many years ago in NW Scotland during August, walking into a flock (c30) of immature Ring Ouzels perched up on a Mountain Ash strewn rocky hillside...the likes of which I could not ''compute.'' Being heavily scaled black and white (I presume this transitional plumage doesn't last long..as I've never seen the likes of since). Had it not been for the presence of a single adult bird..I'd probably still be in the dark.
