Eiderdown in Finland (1 Viewer)

Hello,

I have a friend, an ornithologist from Russia, who is studying common eider (Somateria molissima). She is an author of several books and articles about this bird. She cannot find any information about collecting of the eiderdown in Finland. I couldn't find anything either. I know that these days eiderdown is mostly collected in Iceland, this is not common in Finland. Still it is collected in small quantities. I would really appreciate if you could point me toward any information, publications or literature about common eider in Finland, and especially about the collection of the eiderdown - where it's collected, methods etc.

Thank you.

Thank you, good information about eider in Finland. Unfortunately, it's not about eiderdown collection, but useful.

Breeding pairs: 100,000–120,000 (!!!) Eider really is the characteristic bird of Finnish archipelago, You are probably quoting the number of grids.

It is not so easy to find information about down collecting. In any case, it is in small scale. I have personally done that, but very little and long time ago. Perhaps, for more information, it is best to contact the company which uses Eider down: http://www.joutsen.com/
