Bird Guides around Guanacaste -Costa Rica

Can anyone recommend a bird guide around Guanacaste? I have been in contact with a couple but have had no or little response. I am leaving this Sunday for a week.

Thanks in advance.

Rich

Hi Rich,

Have you tried Olivier Esquivel?

I used him twice in April and was very good.

I have details for him if you need them.

Cheers

Steve

Small world richard...

I will explain why once olivier has emailed you back 😂

Thanks all. Olivier has now been in contact and I am out with one of his guides on the 9th August. He comes highly recommended and I am looking forward to a day's birding. Will be useful to swap birding notes at a later date.

I had Andres as a guide and he is highly recommended. Saw 77 species in the day, mostly lifers, including Long-tailed Mannikin, Tody Motmot and Keel-billed Toucan. This was one to one guiding. Expect dry forest in the morning and rain forest in the afternoon. During the trip up you'll look over some very productive farmland.

We had 12 hours on the ground. Breakfast and lunch provided. A bit pricey at $360 but well worth every cent.

Rich,
I notice you quoted a field-trip price in US $. Is that the usual way to pay for such things in Costa Rica? Should I cancel my currency order for CR colones and get US$ instead, or get equal amounts of each? Our trip is all-inclusive, but if I want to arrange a guide for a personal trip I suppose US$ are necessary?
James
PS. Are credit cards (e.g. VISA) acceptable?

James,

we only used $ throughout. Even the smallest shops accept $. Cards are acceptable but the guide requested cash (and in $). We took loads of $1 notes; most tourists in CR are American and they tip for everything - we used these to tip as we were in an all-inclusive too.

We went shopping on the way back from a day in Nicaragua with a guide and even he used $ in his local shop.

Have a great trip.
