Last two,the P900 is a very versatile tool but you need to take the time to learn how to use it.

My sx50 is showing its age and the zoom of the p900 really does appeal. My summary is that whilst not perfect the p900 does a great job and whilst it won't reach the clarity of my DSLR set up it is more than adequate for personal use: I'm probably not submitting to National Geographic! The only concern I have is the suggestion in some reports that it can be slow 'hunting' for focus at longer zooms, how has anyone found that?
And have the software problems of 'locking up' reported after launch been resolved?
Thanks

While i never noticed any focus time problems if they happen i would say its other things in the frame the focus can see but you cant,it does need good light for the results or you need to be close.

Never had the lock up problem, the only reason i dont have mine now is i wanted a second m4/3 body so swapped it.

The sample below was on a dull wet day @400iso,every time i do this i wish i still had mine ;)

Thanks, I think I'm persuaded to go for it. Every camera is a compromise and the perfect unit doesn't exist. It seems the p900 has enough positives for a pretty reasonable price. I hope I can reproduce the quality of your Redshank in tricky conditions!

Hi guys

Had my P900 for 2 days and typical they have both been dismal and cloudy ... hoping the sun shines soon!

I've tried to copy my tried and trusty setting on my FZ150 to the 'equivalent' settings on the P900. On the FZ150 i had 2 custom settings for birding, one for birds in flight and one for general birding.

Any advice on the best settings for the p900 please?

Many thanks!

I think most of the time i had shutter priority and auto iso up to 400 possibly 800 with single point focus,BIF i only got a couple of big birds in the distance,i was trying the same settings but with some form of multi point focus.

Thanks Mike. Got some sunshine at last today, nice and bright but quickly realised that with a zoom this big, atmospheric turbulence is magnified too!
Anyway here are some shots from today, most of them at 1000-1500mm and all hand held. Hobby and Sandwich Tern 70m plus distant.

Can anyone recommend a lens hood and/or screw on lens protector to fit on the front please?

I'd also like to try some kind of loupe or viewer over the LCD and use the LCD in place of the EVF which I find dull with poor eye relief ... I keep hitting the WiFi upload button (and other buttons) with my nose 😂

Anybody got recommendation on these ?
Thanks

Bought the P900 some days ago. Seems like it's a good camera but hard to handle for birds in flight. Pics were shot in bird-mode.

Anyone experienced a restriction of shutter speed in Bird Mode? Even with full light it's not exceeding 1/500.

Purple Heron was abt 40 meters away and shot during very harsh light conditions.
Yellowhammer was very close abt 5 meters but in low light conditions.
Red kite was shot at abt 80 (maybe more) meters and also during harsh light conditions.

(Some paint shop pro treatment to the pics)

Today i tried many shot of flying raptors with bird mode but as i told shutter speed was restricted to 1/500 even if there was not one cloud visible. Most pics got blurred.

All in all im not unhappy with this camera. Still have to work out the best settings for me.

If i remember right its 67mm and i bought one of these but you need to fold it back for wide angle shots.

Lovely set of images, you should do well with it if this is how you start.

Thanks Mike, I'll get one oredered.

What I like about this camera is how easy it is to use though sure I can do a bit better when I get more used to it.
I know these images are not up to DSLR standard but I've not spent £000's, it weighs next to nothing, totally portable, grabable and has got that all important extra reach and effective VR :eat:
I just want half decent record shots on a screen and the camera gives me those yet remain first and foremost a birder.

Some imag s from today
