How many monospecific families have you seen? (1 Viewer)

JWN Andrewes

Poor Judge of Pasta.
For all those families containing just the one species (apologies if this has already been done and I missed it). Taxonomist don't seem to be able to agree what constitutes a family, so I've simply followed what we have in our Opus here. Anyone wishing to follow different rules, well, it's a free world*.

Here's mine.

Ostrich (Struthionidae)
Hamerkop (Scopidae)
Osprey (Pandionidae)
Secretarybird (Sagtariidae)
Limpkin (Aramidae)
Sunbittern (Eurypygidae)
Ibisbill (Ibidorhynchidae)
Hoatzin (Opisthocomidae; verty disappointed to see this is no longer afforded a monotypic order!)
Sharpbill (Oxyruncidae)
Black-capped Donacobius (Donacobiidae)
Bananaquit (Coerebidae)

*like hell it is, but you know what I mean.

Ostrich (Struthionidae)
Hamerkop (Scopidae)
Osprey (Pandionidae)
Secretarybird (Sagtariidae)
Limpkin (Aramidae)
Sunbittern (Eurypygidae)
Bananaquit (Coerebidae)

There may be others, never really thought about it!

Interesting idea! Here's my list according to Clement's*

Struthionidae (Ostrich)
Scopidae (Hamerkop)
Pandionidae (Osprey)
Sagittariidae (Secretary-bird)
Eurypygidae (Sunbittern)
Aramidae (Limpkin)
Dromadidae (Crab Plover)
Opisthocomidae (Hoatzin)
Pityriaseidae (Bornean Bristlehead)

Benji

Ostrich (Struthionidae)
Hamerkop (Scopidae)
Osprey (Pandionidae)
Secretarybird (Sagtariidae)
Sunbittern (Eurypygidae)
Bananaquit (Coerebidae)

I've seen those above - must check to see if I've seen others - but Ostrich & Osprey will be/are more than single species.

Opisthocomidae (Hoatzin)
Steatornithidae (Oilbird)
Donacobiidae (Donacobius)
Peucidramidae (Olive Warbler)
Coerebidae (Bananaquit)

upcoming trip to Africa will hopefully add a few more...

Here's the list of monotypic families I got going through Clements (26 total). I included Dromaiidae as the only other species in this family are extinct. If that's a valid reason, Emu can be added to my list as well - adding up to a total of 13 monotypic families seen!

Struthionidae (Ostrich)
Dromaiidae (Emu)
Balaenicipitidae (Shoebill)
Scopidae (Hamerkop)
Pandionidae (Osprey)
Sagittariidae (Secretary-bird)
Rhynochetidae (Kagu)
Eurypygidae (Sunbittern)
Aramidae (Limpkin)
Pluvianellidae (Magellanic Plover)
Dromadidae (Crab Plover)
Ibidorhynchidae (Ibisbill)
Pedionomidae (Plains-wanderer)
Opisthocomidae (Hoatzin)
Steatornithidae (Oilbird)
Leptosomidae (Cuckoo-Roller)
Oxyruncidae (Sharpbill)
Notiomystidae (Stitchbird)
Pityriaseidae (Bristlehead)
Panuridae (Bearded Reedling)
Tichodromidae (Wallcreeper)
Donacobiidae (Donacobius)
Urocynchramidae (Przewalski's Rosefinch)
Dulidae (Palmchat)
Peucedramidae (Olive Warbler)
Coerebidae (Bananaquit)

I wasn't going to post on any of these threads ever again,. Honest, I wasn't. Really.

Dromadidae Emu
Balaeniciptidae Shoebill
Scopidae Hamerkop
Anseranatidae Magpie-goose
Sagittariidae Secretarybird
Aramidae Limpkin
Eurypigidae Sunbittern
Dromadidae Crab-plover
Pedionomidae Plains-wanderer
Ibidorynchidae Ibisbill
Steatornithidae Oilbird
Opisthocomidae Hoatzin
Dulidae Palmchat
Notiomystidae Stitchbird
Tichodromidae Wallcreeper
Panuridae Bearded-tit

Ostrich is two species, Osprey is considered two species by some authorities, Donocobius is a Wren, Bananaquit is now stuck in something that I can't be bothered looking up and Bornean Bristlehaed is in Cracticidae Bristleheads ;) ;) ;)

If I go by Benji's list then:

Struthionidae: Ostrich.
Dromaiidae: Emu.
Scopidae: Hammerkop.
Pandionidae:Osprey.
Sagittariidae:Secretary Bird.
Panuridae:Bearded Reedling.
Coerebidae: Bananaquit.

EDIT: so according to Chris I can count Anseranatidae (Magpie Goose) too?

Yes............... but not Ostrich or Osprey ( It was one of you upside down bu**ers that started messing with Ospreys ;) )

Chris

Donacobiidae is actually a relict "old world warbler", and bristlehead is some sort of weird basal corvid. Both are recognized as monotypic families by IOC, which AFAIK is the only list to split Osprey and Ostrich.

Bananaquit is well embedded in the Tanagers, however there is uncertainty over where the hell Yellow-breasted Chat goes, so you could TEMPORARILY consider it a monotypic family
