Oare Marshes, Wednesday 21st July (1 Viewer)

Dear all,
There were good numbers and variety of waders at Oare over the hight tide this afternoon. The highlight was two adult Curlew Sandpipers on the East Lagoon from 1pm. There was plenty of evidence of summer plumage on these birds as the record shot below reveals. Only one bird was present after 2:45pm ( my pager has just said there are two at Oare at 6:45pm so the wanderer must have returned).

Other sightings in no particular order:

600+ Black-Tailed Godwits evenly divided between East and West lagoons.
15 Greenshank (a brief visit by 9 on the East Lagoon at 2pm helped).
15 Ruff
4 Avocets
3 Spotted Redshanks (all winter plumage)
1 Turnstone on the East Lagoon
1 Knot in summer plumaged lost amongst the Black-Tailed Godwits (in summer plumage and not totally unlike the Curlew Sandpipers in a brief view).
20 Dunlin
4 Common Sandpipers including 3 on the shoreline.
5 Whimbrel on the shoreline then on West Lagoon.
2 Green Sandpipers on West Lagoon.
Common Terns - a flock of 26 rested briefly on the shoreline near the slipway at 1:30pm.
2 Marsh Harriers
3 Little Egrets
4 Ruddy Ducks (3 drakes).

Not a bad selection of waders and my first Curlew Sandpipers of the year. A most enjoyable visit in good weather.
