Mallorca 2017 (4 Viewers)

Thanks Mike, you missed nothing after you left, just a couple more of Kevin's jokes.
It was a great day but a bit quiet, still some good birds though, the coastline looked fabulous in the sunshine and it reached 18 degrees.
The depuradora is always worth a visit but I have no idea where all the Starlings have gone.
I must get to Albufera before the months end. Glad the pies were acceptable. 6/10 I reckon.

Quite an influx of Ferruginous ducks it seems. 26 were seen at Bassa de Sant Jordi which I think is a small body of water near the airport, perhaps Pep could confirm if it is the same place as Bassa de Can Guidet.
Well done for seeing the Black-throated Diver Mike, everyone thought it had gone. One of us with have to change our name on Rare Bird Alert, I got phone calls asking about the diver so I am getting the credit for your sightings.
By the way, it's snowing on the high bits today! Mike

My low bits were cold today!!!

Visit to Maristany to search for the ferruginous ducks. High Waters indeed! And no duck. However was great to see some 300 or more Crag Martins in a frenzy feeding session. Other birds seen included Tufted Ducks, Red Crested Pochards, Common Pochards, Little Grebe, Gadwall and Shoverlers.

Great photo Pep.
Hi Martin,
Do you have a definative list of butterflies ( and moths ) of Mallorca?
Thanks Mike

Hi Mike
I do have a list of the butterflies that have been reported from the Balearic Islands. I wouldn't call it a definitive list - more a working list as there are several almost certainly dubious records, some that need confirmation and others that need further checking. It's in Fauna Europaea order and is only scientific names. The letters C F I M and Me refer to the various islands, FauEu indicates that the species is listed from the Balearics on the Fauna Europaea website, Pons refers to publications by Guillem Pons and there are also some additional personal notes. Please be aware that it does contain some, as yet, unpublished information. The moth list is also a working list but it is MUCH bigger with more extensive notes and contains all of my own research data. I've not done a recent count but it is currently about 1000 species. I'm always happy to identify any moths from photographs (or specimens), or explain in more detail about any species in the list below.

I hope this helps:

One booted Eagle struggling in the wind.

Its a hard time for the birds

Hi Pep. Thank you very much, I have been to Bassa de Son Jordi twice before and saw some good birds. I didn't know what it was called.
I braved the wind and hail at Porto Colom this morning and saw two Gannet before giving up.
I also went to the spot Michael Schade gave for Balearic and Dartford warblers but conditions were appalling so I didn't stay long. It looks a great place for both species so I will go back soon. They were calling though. Mike

Great photo Pep.

Hi Martin,

Do you have a definative list of butterflies ( and moths ) of Mallorca?

I may have asked you before..I have found one for Minorca and ask Matt Rowlings for information but he was not aware..he has a great website

http://www.eurobutterflies.com/index.php

Thanks Mike

Hi Mike and Martin,

These might be helpful. The butterfly list is one that, I think, Martin uploaded to the forum some years ago! The dragonfly list is one that I have put together myself, using the Askew, and Dijkstra & Lewington guides, plus information from John Muddeman's website and my own observations. If anyone from the forum can add anything to the dragonfly list I'd be pleased to hear from them.

Looking forward to my first visit of 2017 - a short birding break in early May.

Stew

Hi Stew, many thanks for that, I will keep a copy and let you know about all butterfly and dragonfly sightings that I think may be of interest. Mike

Thanks Martin too! As you know, I try to post here any moths I come across and I have very much enjoyed doing so. The list will be very helpful for me, Mike

A very unseasonal Dotterel was found yesterday by Juanjo at Sa Barrala, near Salobrar de Campos. Also Kingfishers around the coast and good numbers of Turnstones. I saw eight at Colonia Sant Jordi. No sign of any Alpine Accentors yet but they will probably be found on the peaks. Castle Alaro is a good place at this time of the year.
A Pallid Harrier was also seen and photographed at Albufera, Ibiza last Friday so it's worth keeping an eye on all harrier sightings.
The Black throated diver is still at Andratx, nice photo by Mike a few posts ago. It has been quite a celebrity.
I know a few birders are coming here at the end of this month so there will be quite a few good birds around to keep you happy. Good birding, Mike

I have also just read that a Wallcreeper was seen on Menorca recently. My most wanted bird, what a gem that would be if one was found in Mallorca. There just might be one out there. Mike

Hi Mike ,Thanks for the info regards coming over in March (on 2016 thread) I was all set to book a week in early March for the flowers , cheap flight etc. but checking transfers they are dearer than the flight , so it looks like car hire from the airport , bit unsure of what its like to get out off and into the airport any advice from the group .
thanks Brian

Hi Stew
Thanks for these.
I've just been through your Odonata list and compared it with the list of species recorded from the Balearic Islands on the Fauna Europaea website, and my notes on the Odonata.
FauEu does not list Lestes viridis (the Willow Emerald), but does list the following species:
Coenagrion caerulescens (Fonscolombe 1838)
Lestes barbarus (Fabricius 1798)
Orthetrum brunneum (Fonscolombe 1837)
We do Odonata transects in s'Albufera and also record them as casual sightings and have a few different species and some additional species, but they were identified from nymphs obtained from aquatic samples so I have until now regarded them as dubious. However, one such species (Coenagrium scitulum, the Dainty damselfly) has now been published from the Balearics (in Odonatologica 24: 269-282), I got a copy this afternoon and it deals with records based on larvae, adding C. scitulum from Mallorca and Menorca. They also list L. viridis and Aeshnia affinis Vander Linden 1823 from the same islands.
I guess the next addition to the Balearic fauna might be Trithemis kirbyi, the Orange-winged Dropwing, which is expanding its range in Spain and has recently been found in Huesca prov., near the French border.

Hi Brian
Yes, they are very expensive. Getting in and out of the airport is fine, especially if you are used to driving o the 'wrong' side. The roads are well signposted and, in my experience, one always gets a map and directions from the hire company. The only problem is that traffic can be quite heavy. I tend to stick to the main roads when leaving the airport.
