Credit card payments? (1 Viewer)

Hi.

I am visiting The Gambia this October and was wondering what the situation was with regard to paying in restaurants etc. I have heard that most establishments do not take credit cards.

We are staying at the Senegambia Hotel. Guide sorted and counting the days.

Thanks.

Lee

What you have heard is correct. Very few if any restaurants take any form of card. To get cash from ATM's you must have a Visa card. Mastercard does not work in ATM's here (yet). ATM's in the tourist areas often run out of money especially on Sundays. You can only withdraw 3000 dalasi (about £43) at each transaction with a maximum of three transactions a day. Obviously if you get charged for using your card this can work out expensive.

Hire a safe deposit box at the hotel, bring sterling and change it as you go. The exchange rate is very favourable to visitors now being about 70 dalasi to the £. Travellers cheques can now only be changed in banks at a very low exchange rate.

Cash Sterling is definitely the way to go.Bank charges for ATMs just uneconomical. You could pay your hotel bar bill by credit card though.
