Off the coast near San Francisco in early September. I think Sooty should be by far the most common there, but is it a safe ID? Thanks!

I only ever saw Short-Tailed Shearwater during my December visits to California and specifically at Monterey. Everywhere else on the west coast and at other times of year it was always Sooty Shearwater seen. You can't really see the underwing or head on these shots so, yes, probably Sooty Shearwater on time of year.

from these photos I can't say they are not short-tailed, but the odds are about 99% that all dark shearwaters are Sooty in San Fransisco area where there are tens of thousands of them.

Thanks, so we'll accept them on time of the year as a lifer :) Short-tailed we have seen plenty of in Australia, but Sooty has been elusive so far.
