A CHAPLIN

Well-known member
Volunteer field assistants needed for red kite study in Denmark!

1-2 volunteer positions have just become available. Priority will be given
to person(s) with strong experiences in raptor research and handling.

The available time period is mid May to mid July 2005.

See below for more information about the project as well as how to apply.

Research into the potential reasons for the poor population establishment of
red kites (Milvus milvus) in Denmark. This M.Sc. work is focused on
environmental contaminant studies of red kites with comparative field work
on barn owls (Tyto alba) and European kestrels (Falco Tinnunculus).
Assistants will help with all aspects of the project depending on period of
volunteership and experience. Tasks includes but are not limited to locating
red kite nests, carrying and climbing ladders, checking nest boxes and
nests, nest observations, capture & handling, measuring, bleeding, banding,
data entry and analyses. Field work will take place in south eastern
Jutland, some of the most beautiful countryside in Denmark. There may also
be telemetry and GIS work involved but it is not guaranteed. Successful
applicants must possess excellent personal skills, a strong and independent
work ethic, have previous field work experience, careful data recording
skills, and be able to endure early and long hours of work and waiting in
the field. Strong skills in behavioral observation, as well as an interest
in birds, animal behavior, and conservation is preferred. Previous
experience with bird handling, tree climbing, and telemetry is a big plus
but not required. Possession of a valid driver license is required.
Applicants should either be a current undergraduate student or already
possess a BA or BS degree in biology, conservation, or a related field. The
project will provide free shared rugged field housing, but travel cost to
and from Denmark, travel insurance, food and other expenses are the
responsibilities of the volunteer. The overall project will run from April
2005 through September October 2005. Applicants may apply for a minimum of
one month participation. If interested, please send a cover letter including
stating why you are interested in this position, and a CV including the
names, emails and phone numbers of 3 references.
