zeiss 8x30 t coating (1 Viewer)

I have a brand new pr never used of the classic 8x30 but it only has the T coating not the P. Is there any way I can have someone changed out the prism and put in a phase one? I called Zeiss and they don't do that. Would the P make a huge difference?

Hi Zeiss Dude

I think James may be able to answer your question about how much difference P* makes.

I think it might be a tough job to find anyone who keeps a stock of the prisms so realistically the only way I think you are likely to be able to obtain P*-coated prisms is to buy a pair of bins containing them - clearly you will be looking for some beat-up and unwanted pair.

Good luck

Hi there,
I really do not think that the difference would be great enough to justify the expense and bother. Not only difficult to find the T*P* prisms, but costly to have a specialist replace them as well. If you really want a classic with T*P* coatings, probably better to look out for a good one, buy it and then sell your T* coated one, it would likely work out better cost wise. But one thing to check out first, I believe, but stand to be corrected, some of the later Classics Marked just T* did actually have P* coatings as well, Zeiss took a little time to get around to changing the markings, so it's worth sending your serial number to them and asking.
Good luck.

Which 8x30 Classic is this? Last time I noticed a few years ago the individual focus 8x30 Safari was still not P coated and still used single layer T coating, not T* multi-coating.

This is correct. After Zeiss used phase coatings in all binoculars they just dropped the P* because it was implied in every T* coated bin. I can't recall when they did this but if you got them in the last few years I'd say they are phase coated.
