Going for Gold
Hi,
Can anyone give me any contacts for a trip to Gujarat, India this winter. A couple of tours I looked at are either full up or aren't going while late 2012. A mate of mine used Backwoods a few years ago but the only info I can find on their website relates to their camp at Goa.
I'm looking for someone who could basically arrange everything for just myself or hopefully another birder or small group. Obviously I'd like to have a chance of seeing the specialist stuff out there such as the chat, owl and crab plover if poss, but I'm not into 'tick and rush' holidays. The more chance I have to field sketch the better, but obviuosly it's different when on tour!
Also, excusing my geography, is The Little Rann of Kutch in Gujarat? I assume this could be integrated into a tour.

Many thanks in advance for your help.

Russ, I can recommend Jugal Tiwari who runs CEDO. He operates birding and wildlife trips around the Great Rann of Kutch and knows the area and its birds and mammals very well. This is a fabulous area with huge numbers of wintering birds. Stol. Buschat, White-naped Tit, Hypocolius, Sociable Plover, Crab Plover, Sykes's Nightjar, Indian Bustard etc all highly likely. You just need to get yourself to Bhuj.

Little Rann is in Gujarat. I didn't enjoy this area so much, but there are a few things here that are unlikely in the Great Rann.

Cheers
Duncan

I can also very much recommend Jugal and CEDO. If you want to expand your visit in Gujarat I can also recommend Harkirat Sanga from Tragopan Tours. I did some days at CEDO, then some days in Little Rann (organised by Tragopan Tours), adding there Macqueen's Bustard and many raptors. This is also a good place for Sociable Plover. Some infos from my trip in this thread.

From CEDO it's about an 5,5hrs drive to the Little Rann. From there it's more convenient to drive to Ahmedabad (the capital) to get a flight out instead of returning to Bhuj.

Arpit-Deomurari is very enthusiastic birder based in Gujarat, and organized us part of the trip some years ago.

If you want the simplicity of dealing with someone in the UK who will do everything (apart from flights) for you then I would recommend Jo Thomas of Wild about travel (used to be Wild about India). I know Jo is planning at least one Gujarat trip for clients this winter - Rajasthan too. Her ground agents in India are good people and work with the top local guides.

Hi there,
Many thanks for your help in this matter. Now I've got some names!

Anyone else who can help, please do so.

Kind regards

Russ
