The flock of skylark in this vicinity all appear to have left following recent snow (c.5cm cover). I suspect they move to lower, snow free areas, on this occasion to be found only 5km distant. They have not returned, a repeat of what we have seen following heavy snow a few years ago when populations were very hard hit, and had only just showed signs of recovery following the last two very mild winters.

Mainly forgetting corvids, gulls, non-natives, pigeons and tits.

Many thanks to all concerned, Mike.

This session was at our former site where birds are attracted by wild bird cover and supplementary feeders with woodland and hedge cover.

Whoosh netting has not been successful here this winter, though a large flock of granivores has been in the area. We were able to get permission from a neighbour to mist net both sides of the march hedge nearby which the flock was using and this proved very successful.

Normally at this time of year we see signs of high turnover, and try to catch more frequently. The weather has prevented catching more frequently, and signs of turnover are more muted. We have seen a slight increase in catches; a slight reduction in %age retraps; and quite a lot of previous year birds - these catches included 15 from previous years, 10 of which had not been caught previously this winter.
