I've listed below the species and totals for the year so far for the 500 identified species caught to date. It is actually 501 as I id'd some previously caught Light Grey Tortrix last night, on size and patterning. I know there is difficulty in separating them from Grey Tortrix without a knife but have been told that size is a good indication. The patterning seems to be different on the photos I've seen so far too. I've also included one or two micros where it is not possible to distinguish the exact species by noting either agg. or the confusion B&F numbers. I hope this works and does not take up too much space so here goes.

I wonder if that's the longest post on the entire site!
If you've photographed them all, you should be in a good position to publish a guide to Surrey's moths!
We should have a sweepstake on what your total will be by the end of 2006 (my guess would be 675, especially if you include early stages).

Ken

I've looked at last autumn and early winter and I should think the macro total this year will probably go up to about 335 to 340. The micro total is not going to increase much except by id of the outstanding photos (which I will be working on tonight) giving a probable total of about 225. That would fall somewhat short of 600, say 560 to 570. Anyway it will be interesting to find out.

I'm hoping to set up a Country Camera website this winter with moth, bird and any other wildlife photos that I already have. I'm very impressed with Mike's Hants Moths and the way it is so easy to use with its thumbnails by family. (Only one gripe there Mike and that's having to click on the search box when going to the home or search page but it's small effort for all the info you've made available). I've said before that it would be impossible to do what I've done on micros this year (and macros would take longer) without the internet and a decent digital camera. There just is not time for a beginner, and I suspect a more experienced moth-er, to id all the micros that appear during the busy months.

Keep up the good work Mike.

Don't you see the frame, Pete? I see 'home' and 'search' on every page.

PS I was suggesting a sweepstake on your total by the end of 2006!

Hi Ken,

Missed the 2006 bit. One shouldn't make assumptions one should read what it says!

On Mike's Hants Moths site I was talking about what happens when you get to the home or search page ie then needing to click on the search box rather than the cursor being ready in the box for data entry.

The list comparison looks interesting and might be useful in finding id's of some of my photos. I've processed about 75 Ollie photos tongiht and have only found a multitude of Celypha lacunana plus one new species for me - two Codling Moths. I might give Ollies a break and try the smaller, and sometimes more colourful, species next. At least I've no Pyralids left to id and the Scopies lef to process are already on the list, I think.

All the best

Hi all,

There are a number of 'imperfections' that I'm aware of. The search is a bit of a double-edged sword - until such time as I can build my own routines and have full control of it, I'm having to depend on Google's indexing of the site and their search engine. This seems to throw up some strange results sometimes but has the benefit of being free. I'll sort the cursor positioning out over the winter, but there's heaps of narrative, maps and at least 200 photographs to be loaded, so it's going to be a slow process.

I only hope I get most of it done before the new season kicks in next spring!

Thanks for the support!

Not sure if I can believe that Pete hasn't got any Nettle-taps or Diamond-backs in his Moth Mecca!!!

Hi Mike,

I've looked though Ken's list and it helped me to find my first Rhomboid Tortrix but I cannot find any Nettle-taps yet and am sure I've not had a Diamond-back this year, or at all for that matter.

I have 67 very small micros, 107 small micros, 112 Ollies (Olethreutinae), 82 Scopies (probably no more new species in this lot as I had a really good go last week and only need S. basistraglis, E. pallida and E. angustea and I don't think I've had any of these) and last but not least 3 Torts (I think) which I have posted below. Any ideas (anyone) please. 0410 was 8-10 mm long but I don't have a measurement for the other two. 1490 has a distinctive shape and may not be a Tort.

I have identified all my Crambies and Pyralids.

All the best Pete H

Cannot help on the IDs, I'm afraid, Pete. Just to say that I think that all (nearly all?) the nettle-taps I've had have been found in daylight. Perhaps you don't have many nettles in your garden?!

All torts: the first two are Cnephasia sp which can't really be ID'd with certainty from photos and the third looks very much like Clepsis consimilana.

Hi Mike,

I think I'll just bin the possible C. cosimilana. I had a couple of good ones back in July so don't need the photos.

I've had another look, before your reply, at the other two and the browner one looks much more like the second photo of 1021 Flax Tortrix (Cnephasia asseclana) on UK Moths than to the Grey Torts. Also, it says in the Graham Collins, Jim Porter, Bob Palmer tome 'Surrey Microlepidoptera' that Flax Tortrix is probably the commonest Cnephasia in Surrey. Have a look at the two photos and see what you think. I know that the two Grey Torts are difficult, especially if the sizes are similar but is this one as bad?

Below is a piccie of the only micro I had today, another Tort, grey with some left over pre-wear reddish colouring. Any ideas.

ps. I've just had a nother look through the torts and I would favour Acleris laterana.

Thanks

Pete H

Doh!

Ken, what I meant to say was in the Graham Collins, Jim Porter, Bob Palmer tome 'Surrey Microlepidoptera' it says "Flax Tortrix is probably the commonest Cnephasia in Surrey". (I have amended the original posting - oops!)

Thanks Ken, I can always rely on you.

Hi Pete,

Acleris sparsana, as per other thread. I still don't want to offer an opinion on the Cnephasia, and anyone who does so from a photo alone is probably kidding themselves and others - although Jon Clifton on ukmoths, who's done more work on this genus than many others in recent years might be prepared to commit. Having looked through John Langmaid's collection earlier in the year, and seeing how variable this group is, unless one's prepared to dissect each one, they all need to be agg'd IMHO. Big well-marked examples are about the only one that can be picked out, on size, as C.stephensiana. One man's common is another's rare, and isn't a great way of determining a specimen!

Thanks Mike,

I think I'll pass both of them on to Jim Porter, our Surrey micro man, and see what he says. He's been very helpful in the past.

All the best

Ah.... that explains it! Please forgive a pedantic former editor. But I was motivated more by curiosity than the desire to put you right.
I look forward to when this 'tome' is available to the public (me, in this case!)

Statistics

I discovered that I'd not ticked spruce carpet on my list, so my Surrey list is now exactly 400.
Adult macros 258
early stage macros 1 (scarce umber)
adult micros 102
early stage micros 39
(I've called a species 'early stage' where I've not seen the adult--arguably the early stages should be given precedence as they constitute proof of breeding.)
Garden list 351.
(i've only identified 13 other species of moth in the UK!)
I know this will be boring for virtually everyone but I love keeping lists!

Well done Ken. A friend of mine who works as a professional entomologist at the Natural History museum said to me, and I think he's probably right, that the most interesting time is the first two years. Mind you there is so much more to get into such as concentrating more on micros, leaf mines, caterpillers etc. There's not enough time to work!!

I've missed about half a dozen species this year that I had last year but it's quite interesting how many species are recorded on only one moth in the year - 32 macros and 37 micros this year - though the micro total will be distorted by those still in the photo list and those not picked up during the busy period.

All the best

I've been away in August both this year and last, so I think I may well have missed some species during that period. Unfortunately the pattern is set to continue while my daughter is still at school!
