Any ideas as to this mushroom. Growing in a hole of a hawthorn tree on a moorland. Thought might be a wizened old inkcap but it gave white spores.

Yes it is isn't it. When you mention it I can see it!!
It wasn't stained with iodine it was KMNO4. My microscope doesn't handle white spores very well. But having said that if I'd used iodine I would have seen it was amyloid.
