The rather rich brown upperparts (greyer in Water Pipit-like littoralis Rock pipits) and well defined breast streaking look great for Water Pipit. Would as ever like to see the second outermost TF though.

The flag made all the difference Jane.
Seriously - just to mention the dark lore - Water is a good choice. Bill is rather hefty though.

Yes the flag did make a difference - it lowered the threshold needed for proof of WP! Its a rare bird in Eire!

Not as rare as Buff-bellied Pipit, mind...Water Pipit is more or less annual.

I have no literature near me; could it possibly be japonica Buff-bellied?
It just doesn't look right for either Rock or Water to me.
